If you’re anything like me…you like nice things. But if you’re REALLY like me, you like nice things that you can find on sale! One of the best places to find a great deal on quality/vintage clothes is…drum roll, please…the thrift store. Despite these gold mines, I’ve come to find that a lot of people have quite a few narcissistic notions about thrift stores: they’re dirty, cluttered & only for underprivileged people…which is far from the truth. Okay, well…maybe not the “cluttered” perception, but still. Thrift stores, or “Treasure Chest” as I like to call them, have been my saving grace. I LOVE THEM. While shopping, there’s no better feeling than landing a pair of vintage high-waisted, mustard colored slacks for only eight bucks! You just can’t beat it. I save a lot of money by thrifting and mixing and matching. Between me and you, I wear the same things over-and-over again, but nobody really notices, because of the way I style the garment…but that’s another blog post(coming soon).
So, you’ve never shopped at a thrift store? Don’t know where to begin? Or your last thrifting experience was a complete headache? Read the tips below for a successful thrifting experience. ..
· As I agreed earlier, thrift stores do have a tendency to be extremely cluttered. With that being said, know exactly what your goal is before you get there. Every time I thrift I normally go with 1 or 2 garments in mind(that’s all I have patience for). For instance, I’ll only go to find a pair of high-waisted pants and a couple of button-up shirts. If you haven’t premeditated about the garments you want, prepare to have an anxiety attack. Okay, I’m exaggerating a bit, but do prepare to be over-whelmed…I was my first few times. But once I got the hang of it, it was “all she wrote.”
Thrift Tip 2: Be Picky In Your Selection
· Okay, sooo after 30 minutes of searching for that perfect fuchsia blazer, you finally see something that catches your eye…only problem is it’s 3x’s your appropriate size and has a small hole in the right sleeve. If you don’t plan on getting that garment tailored or sized..LEAVE IT! Although the clothes may be dirt cheap, one must still be selective in her choosing..that money can go to something more valuable. What good is a garment sitting in your closet cluttering up space?…As I once Instagramed, “A man can easily be compared to a garment in your closet…if you have a dress that doesn’t add value to your collection(your life), make you feel beautiful or like you’re one-of-a-kind…..toss that junk….it’s clogging up space.”
-Funky Patterned Button-Ups
· …you catch my drift. I never buy anything contemporary from the thrift store…that’s what Forever21 is for. The best part about thrifting is lucking up on unique vintage treasures you can’t find anywhere else.
As always…I hope this helpful! Happy Thrifting 🙂
P.S. …to all the “Ambitious Girls” out there….I salute you.
